"Have you every played Donkey Kong?" asks Jamie Werkmeister. "You climb ladders to get to the next level. When I was a kid I couldn’t always get to the next level, but I learned that if you work at it you can usually figure it out."

Now a graduate student at MIT, Jamie recently got frustrated with the snap-on top to her contact lens case. "It was always breaking, but it was quick and convenient compared to the screw-top. I was walking through a machine shop when it hit me: what about a sliding top? I designed it and presented it in class and even got a stereo lithography model of it, which was great because now I know where to improve it."

Jamie plays ice hockey, snowboards, skis and scuba dives, but says her "true heart" is in outer space. When the night sky is clear over Boston, she spends hours gazing at the stars. It’s like her engineering studies, she says. "I’m always wondering what else is out there.
