Mike Lacey’s re-engineered golfball is illegal. In tests by Iron Byron, the United States Golfing Association’s club-wielding robot, the ball flies too far to meet the USGA’s sedate official standard.
Asked to design a livelier ball, Mike had focused on reducing the outside surface area and increasing turbulence inside the dimples. He also wanted the ball to be good-looking.
Teardrop-shaped dimples were his hole-in-one solution. "Once I got that idea, the execution was simple," he says.
Mike’s ball has received two patents. He is confident he can rein in his design and get it approved by the USGA. Inspired by what he calls "the little details of life," he says "everything you come in contact with can be an inspiration if you just take the time to notice things."
